Authors get a lot of the glory, but it would be a mistake to overlook the gifted artists who catch the attention of young readers before a single word of the text is read. Any book lover can tell you about a book cover from their childhood that remains a vital part of their memory of a cherished book to this day.
Illustrators can be the authors themselves, as with Kevin Henkes, or can bring an entirely unexpected dimension to the work, as with K. G. Campbell. They may reinterpret a classic, like Hope Larson, or simply bring the book to life with realistic drawings, like Ted Coconis.
