Summer is finally here, and that means sun, fun, and summer reading! Join us for our first year of the Newbery Tart Summer Reading Challenge. Everyone who completes the challenge will receive Newbery Tart stickers and bookmarks, and be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes like signed items from Newbery authors, book bundles, snack collections, t-shirts, magnets, keychains, and more. Here’s how it works:
Kids:
- Sign up here.
- Choose one activity to complete from this list. Every extra activity you complete increases your drawing chances! Send us an email with a picture or video explaining your creation. Build a scene out of legos, or a diorama, of a scene in a Newbery book.
- Make a drawing or a painting of your favorite character from a Newbery book.
- Perform a puppet show of a scene from a Newbery book.
- Complete the photo scavenger hunt from the grownup challenge (but please make sure your parent signs permission in the signup first).
- Read three Newbery books you’ve never read before (check out our Collection page if you’re not sure which books are Newbery books). Send us a paragraph or short video about the books you read!

- Complete our photo scavenger hunt with items from Newbery books: take a picture of any 7 of the following items (feel free to make ’em selfies!) and tag us in them on Facebook (@NewberyTart), Instagram (@newberytart), or Twitter (@NewberyTarts), or you can email them to us. Anybody who does all 15 items AND can tell us which books we’re referencing (these could often apply to more than one book, but one will do for answer), will get a shout-out on the podcast and an extra entry in the prize drawing.
- A bird (any kind, although penguin, owl, and heron are all excellent options)
- Maple syrup
- Skates (ice or roller)
- A spider, cricket, or other bug
- A shovel (your own or state-issued)
- A doll (bonus if creepy and/or possibly possessed)
- A newspaper
- Any kind of boat
- A waffle, with or without toppings
- A graveyard/tombstone (but then get the heck out of there)
- A potato (bonus if you don’t want to eat it, but that’s all there is)
- A sports ball of any persuasion
- A strawberry, apple, corn, or other produce
- One hundred of anything
- An adorable and/or pitiful dog (this one is pretty much a freebie)
- Read a Newbery book you haven’t read before, and tell us what you think of it (this can be a full review or as short as, “I loved it!”
