The first and foremost resource for anyone interested in the John Newbery Medal is the Newbery Medal homepage. There you can find comprehensive lists of winning books and authors, committee members, information about the medal and its history, and links to information about related awards.
It has, since 1922, been awarded annually to the book chosen to be “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children” published in the previous calendar year. The runners-up (there have been as many as eight in one year) are called Newbery Honor Books.
The medal is awarded by a panel of teachers and children’s librarians at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting, usually in January. Follow this link for a live webcast of the Youth Media Awards, which include the Newbery.

The Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia, is fabulous in every way, and often has author events with Newbery authors. They also started On the Same Page, a community-wide reading initiative in Decatur, Georgia.

The Georgia Center for the Book is hosted by the DeKalb County Public Library and provides support to libraries in addition to a vast array of literary programs.
A Mock Newbery consists of a group (librarians, booksellers, book clubs, could be anybody) nominating, discussing and choosing the books they would pick for the Newbery, if it were up to them. It’s kind of like the fantasy football of children’s books. They’re a phenomenal resource for discovering quality books, as the ones they choose are generally books that are real contenders for the award, except there are many more of them.
Heavy Medal is THE mock Newbery blog. It belongs to the School Library Journal, and from September through January they discuss “all things Newbery: the history and purpose of the award, terms and criteria, possible contenders, and results of Mock Newbery discussions.”
The Atlanta Mock Newbery is a new (as of 2017) mock Newbery created by Eric Carpenter (school librarian extraordinaire) and Atlanta author Laurel Snyder.
