My first trip to the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting (which is a conference for librarians, and also where they announce the winner of the Youth Media Awards, including the Newbery) was fan-frickin’-tastic. For the record, the honor books are Freedom Over Me by Ashley Bryan, The Inquisitor’s Tale by Adam Gitwitz, and Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. The winner of the 2017 Newbery Medal is The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. I am notoriously bad at predicting the winners and didn’t call any of these, but they’re excellent choices.
The Youth Media Awards were mind-blowing in a quiet way. I was in an auditorium full of people who know and care as much (or more) about children’s books as I do, and they were SO. EXCITED. But they’re librarians, so they weren’t noisy about it. And the conversations going on around me just made my heart happy.
Also, during the rest of the weekend, I got to hear Kathryn Lasky talk (more about that later) and also Kwame Alexander (ditto).

So for anyone debating attending in the future, dooooo ittttt. Nobody excluded me for being a mere bookseller, and it was really rewarding. (Plus I enjoyed a bunch of other non-Newbery stuff, like Neil Patrick Harris giving a hilarious and touching talk, and also the Exhibit Floor, which I hadn’t even known about, but which loaded me up with something like 100 books, including at least one very strong contender for next year’s Newbery, imho.)
