Last night was the first-ever meeting of the Atlanta Mock Newbery, and it was so enjoyable. For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, a mock Newbery is when a group (kids, adults, school class, work friends, anybody) gets together to decide what books they would choose for the Newbery if it were up to them. It can be a single meeting or something ongoing throughout the year. In this case, books were chosen in batches throughout the year and then we met yesterday to deliberate. For me personally, it really helped me reset my thinking about what the Newbery really is. I often get hung up on my personal preferences about a book rather than the Newbery criteria – which is fine when I’m reviewing a book in general, or at work when I’m finding a great book for a customer, but not when I’m talking about what makes a book good (or bad) specifically as Newbery book. It was so helpful to have someone like Eric (one of the organizers) who is very familiar with being on similar committees and moderating these kinds of votes, to keep us on track and remind us of the criteria.
I can’t wait to see how the books we chose compare to the ones that get chosen in Denver in a few weeks!
